Differences between British and American English, for the most part, are understood relatively easily – then there are moments when the translation gets completely lost.
I’m used to people asking me to repeat certain words because they like how I sound, or they don’t understand what I’m saying. A recent trip to the grocery store was one of those moments when what I said didn’t translate very well and ended up being unintentionally amusing.
You can see how confusing it was when I told the American I would wait for him by the big bollards. He laughed the whole time as he thought it meant something completly different. And rude.
Do you have any more examples of lost in translation moments?
