When was the last time you asked yourself a question about your life that you were really candid about answering? All too frequently we get caught up in things we have to complete or should achieve; as well as things we can’t do because we’re stuck in a rut. Even if it’s only once in a while, we should all stop and ask ourselves … What am I grateful for?
I’m new to fact-checking my inner voice; which is all too often an overly critical spokesperson. I think most of us at one time or another have got caught up in unhealthy comparisons or being hyper-focused on the negatives.
Discovering what you’re appreciative about shouldn’t be an exercise in massaging one’s ego (a disheartening aspect within some gratitude articles I’ve read in the past). It’s more about nurturing a focus on positive momentum — what and who encourages growth. Being able to recognize when you need to practice gratitude is a fundamentally valuable skill to acquire.
When my inner voice becomes increasingly negative, that’s when I need to give myself the time and space to count my blessings. It’s an opportunity to uncover what I require to move forward or get out of a negative loop. By sharing with others what has been learnt along the way; this becomes gratitude in action.
Being self-evaluative is healthy, but it needs to be constructive; disrupt your negative inner dialogue by getting into the habit of voicing your gratitude. You can work on improving things while also acknowledging the good you’ve already received or created. Share this with those around you and let them know you see their struggles — but also their shine.
