Advice to Share: A Perspective on Life (A Poem)

When we need some simple, uplifting life advice for navigating tough times, an encouraging perspective shift can help us find a path forward.

I’m sure many of you are aware that life’s challenges are often filled with twists and turns that test our resilience. Acknowledging that this is simply how things go is the first step in navigating the mix of ups and downs, joys and struggles that we all encounter. Life isn’t always a straight path, but we can still find our way.

Embracing this reality isn’t always easy. In fact, I can state with certainty that facing obstacles with patience and understanding will not always be possible. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or anything else, but by accepting that not everything can be controlled or easily resolved, we create space for self-compassion and adaptability.

If we can learn how to value progress over perfection, even celebrating each step forward, no matter how small, we instill within us the ability to possibly find ways through those times with a little more consideration and ease. Of course, it depends completely on what it is we’re facing, as some upsets in life can bring us to our knees and disrupt everything. But knowing we can focus on progress as we work to find more stable ground or make sense of a new beginning, we can begin to move away from the disappointment or pain that can lead to inaction or further setback.

“A Perspective on Life” is a poem by Molly from Transatlantic Notes that reads, “If there was one thing I’d want you to know; it’s that life is sometimes fast and sometimes slow, and even when days of sunshine turn to bitter, cold rain, you will always be able to find the light again.”

One useful mindset shift that has often helped me regain balance during arduous life events is channelling some of my energy into what I can control. This may not always work immediately, but it can eventually provide a sense of stability and empowerment during periods of uncertainty or adversity. By paying attention to what I can influence—such as my reactions, how I perceive things, or my daily routines—some sense of agency can be reclaimed. During times like these, seeking help and support from trusted friends, family, or professionals becomes indispensable. One of the most effective mental adjustments we can make is to remember that we are not alone.

In fact, receiving the right emotional and/or practical assistance from others can be a crucial step towards moving on and healing. When we face challenges alone, feelings of isolation can grow, making the burden even heavier. Reaching out to those we trust not only allows us to share the emotional load but also reminds us that connection fosters understanding and comfort. Friends and family provide valuable reassurance, while support groups and professionals, such as therapists or counsellors, offer expert guidance and coping strategies. Whether it’s a conversation, a shoulder to lean on, or useful advice, it can all bring relief, clarity, and renewed strength.

However you choose to work through challenges, complications, and disappointments, it’s always helpful to have a little reminder (like this poem) that better times are possible ahead; progress always starts with just one small step. Even a minor change or piece of advice can have a meaningful impact. Whether it’s adopting a new habit, reaching out for support, or simply adjusting your mindset, taking one small action can set the stage for larger improvements. Every effort counts, and one manageable change can become the impetus needed to build momentum and gradually find your footing again. Transformations are possible, even when things look a little bleak and uninspired.

What advice have you received (about life) that made a positive difference? What has helped you face difficult times?

  1. What a beautiful poem and inspirational post Molly! For me, acknowledging that I can’t change the current situation and can only make the best of it has been the key to getting through difficult times. It’s easy to spend so much time and energy wishing things away with no effect.

  2. The poem was beautiful! It is so true that after the rain, the light will shine again. I also loved the progression over perfection. This was an amazing post!

  3. Wow this so accurately describes life situations so many of us go through. Agreed shifting ones mindset or perspective can really help. But this is harder to do then one would think. In particular if have a lot of hardships over the course of years. I just try my best to stay positive and be grateful.

  4. This is such a beautiful and thoughtful piece! I really love how you emphasized progress over perfection—it’s a powerful reminder that even the smallest steps can lead to meaningful change. I also relate to the importance of focusing on what we can control during tough times; it truly does help bring a sense of stability. One piece of advice that’s always stuck with me is to give myself permission to pause and breathe before reacting—it’s made a huge difference in how I navigate challenges. Thank you for sharing these uplifting words!

    1. That permission to pause before reacting is excellent advice! I think so many of us are used to reacting immediately and not allowing ourselves time to work out how we want to proceed. Sometime an instant response is needed, but for those times we can take a breath, it’s so useful. Thanks for sharing that!

  5. What an amazing poem Molly, this accurately describes life in a nutshell. I am going to write this one down for later use, I am thinking of someone in particular who would benefit from it. Thank you!
